If you’ve read much of my blog, you’ve probably figured out how much I love dance. In any form – tap, contemporary, ballroom, even country line dancing. My absolute favorite is ballet. For me, it’s the Olympic sport of dance. I took lessons for years as a child, and if I could find a studio nearby that offered adult classes, I would still be taking lessons.
As such, I am a huge fan of So You Think You Can Dance. Last night the show returned after a two-week absence due to the Olympics, and all the routines were repeats of ones choreographed over the show’s many seasons by Mia Michaels. As I watched, I noticed a theme. Watch these three videos and tell me if you see it, too.
This first one, Hanging On, was the opening group routine. It’s beautiful and subtly dark.
Lots of ropes. The girls are bound at their wrists with the men manipulating the ropes. The girls in white kneel, groveling for their man’s attention.
This routine by Will and Amelia was not one of my favorites, but there was spanking. No, seriously.
He’s wearing a suit; she’s wearing lingerie. This is a typical power play theme.
This routine by Cole and Lindsay was my favorite of the entire show. In it, Cole plays cold and ruthless eerily well. He’s pretty rough with her, and even though she resists him, she goes back again and again for more.
That one is just . . . wow. And did you see his deltoids? (I think I might have a secret deltoid fetish, which is fortunate since my husband has very nice ones.) I think Cole could win the show for the men. He is incredible every week and so versatile – martial arts, dance, acting.
E.B. White said, “A writer’s style reveals something of his spirit, his habits, his capacities, his bias. . . it is the Self escaping into the open.” I suspect it’s the same with all forms of art, which means that, through her choreography, Mia Michaels is revealing her kinky fascinations whether she means to or not.
Think Mia read a certain book(s), or is playing off the craze?
I don’t think so in this case since those routines, except for the group one, were all choreographed in previous seasons, well before the books came out. I suppose she could have been reading the fan fiction, but I doubt it.
Did you like the dances? It may not be your thing. My husband will watch the show sometimes but mostly he disappears into his man cave until it’s over. Lol. I love when the routines get down and dirty like this, though.
Oh my… we are similar! I love Mia Michael’s choreography. I’m a modern dancer too…
